Have you ever heard of the Rolex Space-Dweller?
The 1960s were a time when humanity pushed its limits. As the Space Race turned the world's attention to the skies, in 1963, NASA's legendary Mercury Seven astronauts visited Japan.
This visit created such excitement among the Japanese public that Rolex took a bold and experimental step to catch the wave.
Re-labeling the Explorer 1016 model as the “Space-Dweller,” it produced a limited edition version exclusively for the Japanese market.

Production numbers were never officially announced, but most sources estimate that between 100 and 200 units were produced. It was sold exclusively in Japan. Rolex didn't include this model in its catalogs. The masses were never aware of its existence. It wouldn't be wrong to call it a truly vintage watch. Its low production and relative obscurity fully meet the definition of vintage and rare. Mechanically, it's identical to the Explorer 1016 from the same period. However, due to its name, it's a watch with a more spiritual connotation than a technical one.
In the mid-1960s, Rolex stopped using the Space-Dweller name.
