The olive green dial of the HDB001 and the khaki beige dial of the HDB002 come together in the same case.

Seiko has expanded the color palette of its 5 Sports Field GMT family with two natural tones. The HDB001 comes in olive green, while the HDB002 features a khaki beige dial. The technical structure, from case to movement, is shared. Therefore, the innovation here is to change the character of the familiar formula through color.

Field GMT line gains color.

The Field GMT series first appeared with the SSK023 and SSK025, both featuring black dials and black finishes. The new duo retains the military field watch look but reduces the emphasis on black. The matte, lightly textured dials reflect minimal light. The large Arabic numerals, minute hand, and framed date window are also easy to read.

The dial features a second 24-hour scale on its inner side. The reddish-orange GMT hand follows this ring. The same color is repeated at the tip of the seconds hand. Seiko uses LumiBrite for the hour and minute hands and embossed indices. The bezel numerals of the HDB001 are black, while those of the HDB002 are filled in gray. This small difference balances the contrast between the two colors.

The HDB002 offers a more open look with its khaki beige dial and grey filled bezel numerals.

39,4 mm case, fixed 24-hour bezel.

The stainless steel case measures 39,4 mm in diameter and 13,6 mm in thickness. The lug width is 47,9 mm, and the strap spacing is 20 mm. These dimensions give the Field GMT a robust body without making it look bulky. The brushed finish is complemented by polished sections on the sides of the case. The total weight of the watch is 147 grams.

The watch has a fixed 24-hour bezel with radial brushes. Therefore, it's not possible to track a third time zone via the rotating bezel. The front features a curved Hardlex crystal, and the back has a screw-down, transparent case back. The crown is not screw-down. Despite this, it has a water resistance rating of 10 bar, or 100 meters . This is a comfortable rating for everyday use.

The HDB002 has a diameter of 39,4 mm and a horn-to-horn length of 47,9 mm.

How does the 4R34 caliber work?

Both models are powered by Seiko's automatic 4R34 caliber. The movement has 24 jewels, vibrates at 21.600 oscillations per hour, or a frequency of 3 Hz. The power reserve is approximately 41 hours. It can be wound manually, and the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled back. The date display is located at 3 o'clock.

The 4R34 is not a passenger GMT clock, but an office-type GMT mechanism. During adjustment, the GMT hand moves independently in one-hour increments instead of the local time hand. This is practical for those who want to constantly see their home time or the time of a distant office. For travelers who frequently change time zones, it is necessary to adjust the local time forward or backward.

Both models feature a brushed five-row steel bracelet and a folding clasp with a safety lock.

Bracelet and its use

Seiko offers both watches with a five-row, brushed steel bracelet. The bracelet has a total length of 205 mm. It features a three-fold buckle, a push-button opening system, and an additional safety clasp. The design remotely resembles the more elegant Jubilee bracelets, while the brushed surfaces preserve the watch's field-originated feel.

Pricing and sales information

The HDB001 and HDB002 are not limited editions, but part of a permanent collection. Monochrome Watches is pricing the two models at €470 and $450 respectively. Official regional prices vary by market. For example, Seiko's UK website lists both watches for £410. The models are now on sale.

Bersenti comment

These two reference models don't introduce any technical innovation. However, the color choices suit the character of the Field GMT better than the black dial. The olive green model looks more military, while the khaki beige model appears calmer and more casual. In both options, the red GMT hand provides the necessary contrast.

The Hardlex crystal and 41-hour power reserve lag behind some competitors in its price class. The 4R34's inability to independently adjust the local hour hand might also limit those seeking a true passenger GMT watch. In return, it boasts a 39,4mm case, 100-meter water resistance, and a legible dial. New colors make the familiar package more appealing.
