Seiko Presage SSA347J

Detailed view of the dial of the Seiko Presage SSA347J automatic watch.

I love the other Presage models, but what I particularly like about this one is the power reserve indicator and date window. Having complications is one of the details that make a watch so beautiful.

You can see the Presage family's approach to contemporary craftsmanship dials in our review of the Seiko Presage Classic Urushi and Enamel.

The SSA347J is part of Seiko's Cocktail Time series. It's designed to capture the spirit of "nomunication" hours (after-work cocktail gatherings) in Ginza, Tokyo. This is one of them. Seiko stands out from other brands with its beautiful dial colors in the Presage series.

In my opinion, the power reserve indicator is one of the most useful complications in a watch. A common complaint is that the power reserve doesn't live up to its promise. This could, of course, be a technical issue. But another detail is that we often think we've wound the watch. These indicators eliminate this, allowing us to see how much we've wound the watch.

Seiko also opted for a subsecond-style day display instead of a date window on this watch. This can be difficult to read, but its distinctive display still sets it apart from other watches. The combination of matte and glossy details on the bracelet and the play of light on the dial elevate this watch to a higher standard.

The watch uses Seiko's own caliber, the 4R57. It has a 40-hour power reserve and a speed of 21.600 vph. The glass is a domed Hardlex crystal. Seiko's use of Hardlex has become well-known. While it's not considered scratch-proof like sapphire, it is said to be scratch-resistant. It has a 40mm case diameter, a 47,5mm lug-to-lug width, and a 20mm strap width. The caseback is also transparent, allowing you to observe the automatic movement at all times.
